The New Killer Drug? ๐Ÿค”

Can I just start off by saying that I love my doctor? ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ She’s quick, to the point, but is very attentive and actually listens to what I have to say (unlike some doctors I’ve come across through this journey).๐Ÿ™„

I had my yearly physical today. My doctor asked me have I seen any specialists since the last time I’ve seen her. Told her yes, a neurologist. Of course, she asked what made me go see him (my insurance doesn’t require a referral, so I didn’t have to go through her to see him). After going through the whole story, I ended it with, “and that’s how I found out I have fibromyalgia.” I told her the medication he put me on gave me terrible side effects (there were a couple but, the biggest side effect that I didn’t like was that it made my brain fog like 1000 times worse normal), so I stopped. She looked up the medication he prescribed and said: “ahhh no wonder.” ๐Ÿ’ก He prescribed me 300mg 2x/day. Entirely too much when you’re first taking it. You have to slowly adjust your body to it. She said taking that amount is fine but, definitely not starting out.

I told her how I’ve been trying to find alternative treatments but, nothing has been really working. I’m not against medication but, I would rather not take anything if I don’t need to. However, at this point, if I’m going to be able to function even halfway like a normal person, I need something else. Ya girl has been suffering and not sure how long I would’ve lasted before I wouldn’t be able to physically get out of bed.

My doctor understood how I felt but, she could also see the pain I was in. She touched all of the “fibro points” and there was pain in all of them. We decided to give the medication another try but, this time at a much lower dose 100 mg 1-3x/day.

So, what was the medication she prescribed me? ๐Ÿค” Gabapentin is also known by the brand name, Neurontin.

Which gets me to the featured photo…

If you’ve ever seen this post floating around social media, please don’t share it. It is absolutely false.

Gabapentin is used to treat nerve pain, and it’s an anti-seizure medication.

Gabapentin is not worse than opioids. It is not an opioid. It is not a narcotic. You can’t get high from this medication unless you abuse it and take a really high dosage (just like a lot of other medication by the way). Gabapentin actually can be used to treat some substance abuse.

Long story short, gabapentin is not the new killer drug. ๐Ÿ™„ The only thing it’s going to kill is this pain…I hope.

I’m hoping this lower dosage, and the slow increase will help out with the pain because my doctor said I need to exercise (her low-key way of saying “yo you gained weight shorr” ๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ˜‚). But she knows the double-edged sword I’m working with right now. “If you exercise you will be in less pain but, you can’t exercise because you’re in pain.” Ugh, ๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿ˜ซI’ll get back in the gym soon but, until then you can find me laying in my bed curled up in the fetal position until this medicine kicks in.

To the person who posted that picture on social media: ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ—ฃ YOU SPELLED OPIOID WRONG! – *whew* There I said it. ๐Ÿ˜
